Hydraulic fracturing of shale formations is a very effective method of increasing oil and gas recovery. Using hydraulic fracturing has allowed the US to become the world’s largest producer of natural gas and it has given us larger proven energy reserves than Saudi Arabia. Water quality and quantity concerns with hydraulic fracturing include; source of the water, well construction, chemicals used, flowback of frac water, quality of the water in the shale gas formation and disposal or reuse of the flowback water. This session looks at monitoring data, chemical use, risk to water resources and how industry and regulators are addressing these issues.
